Summer Fashion Trend: Wide Brimmed Hats

Today I want to share a summer fashion trend that I absolutely love!
It's the wide brimmed hat! I love that celebrities are bringing these hats into style. I think they're perfect for the beach, a day of summer shopping, or a lunch date! I like them when they're worn as an accessory to something dressy, but they can definitely be dressed down too. I don't own one of these, but I'm going to by the end of the summer for sure! H&M has a cute style for less than $15 which can be found here:

Response To Rising Broadway Ticket Prices...and why it's not such a bad thing

I was forwarded an article yesterday afternoon concerning the rising ticket prices of theater on Broadway in NYC. The article pertained especially to The Book of Mormon, the smash-hit winner of the 2011 Best Musical Tony Award. The article noted that before BoM won the Tony, premium ticket prices ranged from $192 to $277. After the win, however, the same seats are now being sold for between $302 and $477. The author of the article goes on to bash Broadway and the entire theater community for this "outrageous scam" and complains that it seems theater fees these days are comparable with hidden fees at the airport.

I just want to say that I completely disagree with the point of view presented in this article. Yes, the ticket prices for Book of Mormon have apparently skyrocketed. BUT this is a single show, a musical, and the winning musical of the year. The show is in high demand right now, as it is said to be one of the best shows of all time. If there is demand, why wouldn't the producers want to make a little more money?

My next point is that since there is demand, there will always be someone to pay full price. I rarely pay full price to see shows; I prefer to use the half-price, day-of-show ticket windows located in Times Square. But SOMEONE is going to pay full price and not even blink. So as long as that person isn't you, who really cares?

Theater is that greatest artform in the world. It's also extremely expensive, time-consuming, and stressful. No one in theater ever has enough money. Actors aren't paid enough, everyone's on a budget, and oftentimes producers lose out. Book of Mormon has become the exception to this rule and it should be celebrated, not put down. I feel that it's worth the price to see any type of theater, and if you're really that concerned, don't go. You'll miss out on a great night and a wonderful memory.

A Cheaper Way To Get Manicures!

Today was kind of blahh outside, with no sun or heat to be found. What would have been a beach day turned into a nails day as a result! I LOVE getting my nails done, but I really don't do it enough or as often as I should. It's kind of expensive, and I feel awkward going alone, so I rarely, if ever, get manis and pedis. BUT today I found solutions to both the issues that keep me from having my nails done!

So...what is this "cheaper way to get manicures?" Well, let me tell you, it exists! A normal manicure at the place I go costs $15, and a pedi is $28. And then you have to tip! But today we made a grand discovery! I'm not sure if all nail places do this but, at the nail salon in my town, you can ask for a COLOR CHANGE and it costs only $7!!!

THERE IT IS!! A mystery of life has been solved. The cheaper way to get a mani or a pedi is to have a color change done instead! They still clip, file, and buff your nails, and then they paint them too! AND I had a nail art done for an extra three dollars. I actually got a pedi since I can't have my nails painted while I'm in the Wizard of Oz. But with the color change and the nail art (a design on my big toe) my grand total was $10. With a $3 tip, my pedicure was a good $15 less than it would have been! And that's awesome!

So now you know the secret to getting a cheaper manicure or pedicure! Get a color change. With the money I saved today, I bought myself a mocha coolata at D n' D's!!

Oh yeahh, and my solution to problem number two was to get my nails done with my three greatest friends. Who could have asked for anything more.

Vegan Cookbook Giveaway at Leslie Loves Veggies!

Leslie Loves Veggies is a blog I have been following almost since I started entering giveaways via Prizey. The prizes are always fantastic, and I believe I've even won one or two before! Today, Leslie is giving away a Vegan cookbook, and I invite everyone to check it out here:

I'm not a vegan, but I do love healthy food that has great flavor! I don't like a lot of meat dishes, so I'm sure if I won the cookbook the only hard part would be deciding what great recipe to make!

No Guilt Over Enjoying Summer

So far, summer has been magical and I try to really enjoy every minute and not let it waste away before I have to return to school in the fall. The hardest thing about summer for me, though, is how expensive it is. I find my self leaving the house with $20 and spending all of it on stuff I didn't need and will never have any use for. That's not to say I'm cheap, although I probably am. I did spend money on a concert ticket and a Broadway tour of West Side Story, neither of which I regret. The purchases that leave me feeling half-empty sometimes are the endless smoothies and ice creams bought by the beach, not because of the calorie count but because it's really not stuff I need and I know I will regret giving away the money next winter when I'm all out. But yesterday I was thinking, as I sipped my Ben and Jerry's Berry Tart smoothie, that these next three summers are really the last times in my life when I won't be bound with responsibilities. I love the spontaneous rush of being able to spend my own money, or maybe it's still the rush of being independent in my life. In the moment, those treats with my friends are fun, not to mention tastey. I could probably make better use of the money in the long run, but in the short run I'm going to enjoy the rest of my summer the best way I know how! In the forecast for today, it looks like I'llbe going down to the beach and the port for a day of sunning and spending. And that's ok. I don't want to look back on these years of freedom and remember that I did it any other way.

Excitement Over Bonnie & Clyde On The Great White Way

Hey, All! Right now I'm super excited for a new show that's making it's way to Broadway, and that would be none other than Bonnie and Clyde! As everyone knows, Bonnie and Clyde were a notorious pair of robbers and murderers during the Great Depression in America. The were also hopeless romantics desperate to find their place in the world. After two preview showing, at La Jolla Playhouse and Asolo Rep, respectively, Bonnie and Clyde is coming to Broadway in New York this fall! I'm super stoked since a friend of mine from last summer had the priveledge of being in the Asolo Rep cast last fall. Today I was reading an interview with Ivan Menchell who wrote the book for the musical. It's very interesting and I recommend that you all read it here: He really goes into what a long process completing the musical was, and it makes me appreciate every artist who has ever attempted the feat of writing a musical. Fingers crossed that I will get to see this show, because it sounds like a hit! Yayy broadway!
